I am John T. Reed. I have written a number of well-received books on youth football coaching and one on youth baseball coaching. A number of readers have asked to me write a book on youth basketball coaching. Its not really my area of expertise. But heres a common mistakes made by youth basketball coaches written by William Salus, one of my readers. He copied the format and tone of my similar articles on baseball and football.
Youth basketball coach failures:
- Failure to realize how poor dribbling skills are
- Failure to look for a larger man to bring the ball down
- Rely too heavily on a pure "motion" offense, rather than assigned responsibilities
- Failure to make defense a cornerstone of the team, both man and zone
- Failure to teach constant looking for fast, or more accurately, quick breaks
- Writing off a player because of his offensive skills, when the player can be groomed as a defensive only, rebounder, or both, role player
- Failure to teach a proper give and go that is executed at every opportunity
- Failure to practice rebounding at every practice
- Failure to perform front court trapping
- Failure to teach backdoor screens
Good luck,
John T. Reed
